10 companions set out on a quest to steal the black cauldron, an instrument for making Cauldronborn, undead soldiers,from Lord Arawn so they can destroy it. When they arrive,they find that someone beat them there. Next the slightly scattered companions go to King Smoit's realm to regroup. Seven of them stumble upon a cowardly dwarf named Gwystyl who knows who knows who took the cauldron. In the long journey to finally gain the cauldron, the companions learn that nothing is what it seems.
In The Black Cauldron, Taran, the assistant pig keeper and hero, shows that he is very brave. When Gwystyl reluctantly tells the companions where the black cauldron is, after Doli squeezed him, Taran insists on going to the Marshes of Morva. When his friends say it’s too dangerous, he replies that they can’t let Arawn get there first. The companions find out that destroying the cauldron requires a human sacrifice, he offers to do it. Taran of Caer Dallben is extremely brave.
